Quality clinical experiences are critical to producing outstanding health care professionals. Athletic Training clinical experiences provide students opportunities to integrate knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors while delivering patient care under the mentorship and supervision by qualified preceptors.

In order to best prepare students for athletic training practice with a diverse patient population in a variety of settings, students in our program rotate through at least 3 different settings (secondary school, community college, 4-year university, professional sports, rehabilitation clinic and/or medical office). Assignments are made based on multiple factors, including: the student’s needs (clinical skills and/or personal growth), future career goals, “fit” with preceptor’s personality or teaching style, etc.

Students complete semester-long clinical experiences at our various clinical sites, including:

Supplemental Clinical Experiences

In addition to formal athletic clinical experiences, students participate in supplemental clinical experiences throughout the program. These supplemental experiences include surgery observations, large-scale athletic events, pre-participation examinations, physician practice experiences, community health education events, etc.

Transportation for Clinical Education

Students are expected to provide their own reliable form of transportation to and from their clinical site. We base our clinical assignments on the best fit for the student, not the geographical location of their residence. As such, students should have logistical and financial plans for traveling up to 30 miles between the CSUF campus and their assigned clinical site 4-6 days/week. Students are also responsible for providing their own transportation for supplemental clinical experiences.
