Interprofessional education (IPE) is defined as when students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. Since Athletic Trainers optimize the quality of patient care by practicing within an interprofessional team (e.g., with physicians, physical therapists, EMTs, etc.), it is important for our students to be learn and contribute through IPE. The MSAT primarily provides IPE experiences in collaboration with the College of Health & Human Development and the School of Nursing.

SimLab

Some of these IPE examples that we have utilized in collaboration with the School of Nursing include:

  • MSAT students utilizing the Nursing Simulation Lab to practice lung auscultation on a high-fidelity mannequin during a clinical simulation.
  • Pre-hospital emergency care scenario to allow Nursing students to see what AT students do before the hand-off to hospital staff or EMTs. This was followed by AT students watching Nursing students provide hospital care within the Nursing Simulation Lab. Then a debrief to discuss the shared clinical and communication skills necessary to provide quality patient care
